Hello, and welcome to the first post of my journal. It will cover a range of topics related to interior design; giving you an idea of the process and thoughts behind working with an interior designer and on your own interior projects as well as general handy tips.

Are you planning a new interior design project in your house this spring?  Thinking about changing the paint colour in your living room? Or perhaps have big plans to renovate a whole house? Whatever it is you are thinking of changing, putting some inspiration images together is a great place to start.

Even if your budget hasn’t been set, putting a scrapbook of pictures together will at least bring your project a little closer, and give you a chance to explore your ideas before you finally make a start.

In my eyes, planning is everything – your house is not a ‘60-minute makeover’ and everything needs to be considered practically to suit your lifestyle and needs. A collection of inspirational images is a great way to communicate your style and ideas to a designer.  We have to try to get inside our client’s heads, understand their vision, what they love and what they dislike.

When I was studying design, this would have been a mood board of teared sheets from magazines, printed google images and brochure cut outs. Thankfully, none of us have to do that now as it’s so easy to create a digital scrapbook.

When Pinterest came along it was initially invite-only and populated with pictures by highly influential people. Now, you can pick from a huge selection of images from fashion, travel, architecture and landscape allowing you to create a board to help sum up your style, choose your favourite colours and how you want your space to feel. Once you have created a board you can easily share online with your designer - what better way of pointing out exactly what style of room you are looking to achieve?

Whereas on Pinterest you save your images to Boards, in Houzz you create Ideabooks which you can also share online with your designer.  Those of us who are professionals on Houzz have our portfolios on the site and you can read previous clients’ testimonials.
